Osteopaths primarily assess and diagnose musculoskeletal problems. They employ a range of manual techniques to correct these problems.
Osteopathic Treatment
Osteopathic treatment may include passive range of motion techniques, soft tissue massage, stretching, muscle energy techniques, gentle manipulation of joints and fascia and Osteopathy in the cranial field. The Osteopath has a broad array of hands on techniques which allows them to cater for all ages.
Principles of Osteopathy It is through the Osteopathic principle of the inter-relationship of structure and function of the body that Osteopaths can help the body restore its optimal function and improve well being. How Does This Help You?
Because the musculoskeletal system is one of the largest users of energy in the body it is not hard to see how dysfunctions can lead to an inefficiency of energy utilisation. In general life this may manifest as a feeling of being run down, susceptible to infections, fatigued, tired or acute / chronic pain. Specifically in active people this may mean they can't perform to their required levels and may predispose to injury and or illness. Those with predominantly sedentary or desk bound jobs can be susceptible to postural strain patterns that lead to the above symptoms. Equally, those with repetitive task orientated jobs, involve heavy lifting or labour can be exposed to postural strains or physical injuries that can limit their overall well being. Osteopathy for Pregnancy & Children
Pregnancy is another functional state of being that can lead to poor compensation mechanisms and pain. Osteopathy is well placed to help you through the musculoskeletal issues associated with pregnancy. Refer to our Pregnancy & Paediatrics page for more information.
Osteopathy is for all ages and children can especially benefit from gentle osteopathic treatment - again refer to our Pregnancy & Paediatrics page for more information. Consultations for children under 16 are of shorter duration and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Osteopathic Consult
A detailed client history is essential for the Osteopath to understand the client's clinical history and daily movement patterns. This helps identify any predisposing factors contributing to the injury/ailment. An initial appointment is slightly longer to enable the Osteopath to fully acquaint themselves with a client's history and it pays to pop in 5 minutes prior to your appointed time to complete some paperwork or download a New Patient Form Here and bring it with you. Your Osteopath may then perform some functional or orthopaedic tests to help assess and diagnose your condition. Your Osteopath will discuss the relevant findings and talk you through a treatment plan. The treatment itself may include any of the techniques alluded to above and will be chosen to suit your individual circumstances. Management will potentially include some exercises to do as a part of your own self management. Regular sessions with Osteopaths are useful to ensure the body is operating as efficiently as possible, thus improving well being and reducing the risk of injury. We encourage patients to listen to their bodies so they can assess when is best for them to schedule maintenance treatments.
